I
did it!
You can, too!
I know just what you’re thinking. You’re
thinking, “How can I go to college now? I’ve got kids. I’ve
got a job. This just isn’t the time.”
It is time. I’m Heidi Much.
Just about two years ago, I was struggling with what to do with
my life. I have a husband who’s a dairy farmer and four
young children. At that time, I also had a job, but I didn’t
want to work in a factory all my life. I knew I needed a
college education, but for more than five years, I hesitated -
focusing on all the obstacles I was facing.
Then, one day, I was driving by
UW-Marshfield/Wood County, and I found myself heading into
Student Services and making an appointment. At that moment, I
still didn’t know how I was going to get that degree – but I did
know that I’d never get it unless I stopped thinking about it
and started doing something about it.
My husband and I met with the Student
Services staff and talked through all our concerns. The staff
helped me create a flexible schedule that allowed me to juggle
my roles of parent, wife and student. The professors at
UW-Marshfield/Wood County recognized that older students like me
have obligations that are just as important as school. I was
even able to participate in extracurricular activities – like
the Mature Marauders and the
Student Education Association.
I graduated on May 22. I’m now enrolled at
UW-Stevens Point, majoring in Elementary Education. Someday
soon, I know I’ll be a teacher, and I won’t just have a job,
I’ll have a career!
