Campus Community Players presents ‘Tomfoolery’ and ‘Lips Together, Teeth Apart’ - June 28, 2005

MARSHFIELD – Campus Community Players will perform two theatrical productions at the UW-Marshfield/Wood County.

Tom Lehrer’s musical “Tomfoolery” will be performed Friday and Saturday, July 22-23; Wednesday-Saturday, July 27-30; Wednesday-Saturday, August 3-6; and Thursday-Saturday, Sept. 8-10.  All performances will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre. Tickets are $10.

“Lips Together, Teeth Apart,” a comedy by Terrence McNally, will be performed Friday & Saturday, August 12-13, and Thursday-Saturday, August 18-20.  All shows are at 7:30 p.m. in the Helen Connor Laird Theatre.  Tickets are $10.

Twenty-eight of Lehrer's greatest songs are linked by a biting narrative in “Tomfoolery” to produce an evening of subtle humorous delights. Lehrer attacks American 'sacred cows', having made sure to milk them thoroughly first! Drawing mainly from Lehrer's greatest years, the 1950's and 1960's, this wacky and deliciously wicked entertainment includes such favorites as "Poisoning Pigeons In The Park," "The Masochism Tango," "The Old Dope Peddler," "We Will All Go Together When We Go" and "I Got It From Agnes".

“Lips Together, Teeth Apart” takes place on the 4th of July weekend on Fire Island.  Two couples are celebrating by visiting the home of the deceased brother of one of the wives. Sally and her ineffectual husband, Sam, have invited Sam’s sister, Chloe, and her domineering, snobbish husband, John, to spend the weekend with them. With each totally wrapped up in his or her own problems, none can relate to, or provide comfort to, any of the others.  Fear of intimacy, empty lives and death all merge together in this insightful comedy of dramatic proportions.

“I am very pleased to continue the tradition of summer theatre here at UW-Marshfield/Wood County,” said Professor Steve Decker, director of both plays. “This summer we offer two sophisticated works which our area audiences have come to expect and deserve. ‘Tomfoolery’ is a wickedly funny little musical with many timely themes. It is performed in our Black Box space, a very unique intimate performance venue capitalizing on the intimacy between audience members and performers. ‘Lips Together Teeth Apart’ is a richly detailed comedy which allows the audience a window into each characters heart and mind.”

Immediately following the opening night performance of “Tomfoolery,” a post-show reception and talk back “Just Go Away! – The History We Tried to Forget” will be held in Gallery 450.  Dr. Jeff Kleiman will lead the discussion on the historical references in “Tomfoolery.”

Tickets can be charged by calling the Campus Box Office anytime at (715) 389-6534.  MasterCard, VISA and Discover cards are accepted. Summer box office hours begin July 6.  Call for hours.
