Plan for Career Success Checklist
1st Year:
Career Exploration by focusing on identifying skills, abilities,
and interests
Academic-related activities:
- Learn more about the
Associate of Arts and Sciences (AAS),
Guaranteed Transfer Program, and the
Transfer Information System (TIS).
- Meet with academic advisors to plan
current class schedule and future semesters. Check
PRISM to find out the name of your academic advisor.
- Learn about bachelor’s degree programs
and transfer options to other four-year UW institutions
using
Major Mania .
- Enroll in a variety of general
education courses to learn about different majors.
- Meet with faculty in your academic
area of interest .
- Join a student organization at
UW-Marshfield/Wood County related to your career interest.
If there isn’t one, you can start one!
- Enroll in BUS 194: Career and Life
Plans to merge academic and career interests.
- Enroll in LEC 100: First Year
Experience to help with your academic transition .
- Maintain a high GPA and seek out
learning resources if needed, such as
The Learning Center.
Career development-related activities:
- Pick up a brochure on different
careers and majors in Student Life office.
- Talk to faculty and/or academic
advisors about career options related to your major.
- Take a career assessment, such as
WISCareers or
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), to identify your
skills, abilities, and values related to careers.
- Find out the
occupational outlook for different careers, including
projected job openings and salary information.
- Find a part-time job or internship
opportunity related to your career interest.
- Arrange an informational interview or
job shadow with a current professional in your field of
interest.
- Participate in volunteer,
service-learning, or student organization opportunities.
Find out if volunteer hours or co-curricular activities are
needed for your major.
- Develop relevant skill sets needed for
your major or career interest (EX: PhotoShop experience for
Graphic Arts major).
- Begin to develop your professional
resume or portfolio.
- Participate in Career Development
Workshop series.
2nd Year:
Refine your major and career options and develop action plans
Academic-related activities:
- Continue to meet with your academic
advisor to plan class schedule
- Continue to explore bachelor’s degree
programs and transfer options to other four-year
universities. Select an academic major if you have not
already.
- Apply to the four-year colleges and
universities early in Fall semester, if possible
- Meet with faculty in academic areas of
interest, if you have not already
- Utilize online resources, such as
Transfer Information System (TIS) and
Major Mania
- Maintain high GPA and seek out
learning resources if needed
Career development-related activities:
- Take a career assessment if still
undecided or if you have changed your mind about your major
- Talk to faculty and/or academic
advisors about career options related to your major
- Continue to develop skills and gain
experiences related to your major or career (part-time job,
internship, volunteer, etc.)
- Continue to network or “stay in touch”
with professionals that you have met in the career search
process
- Develop resume and cover letters for
career opportunities
- Participate in a mock interview with
an advisor
- Enroll in BUS 194: Career and Life
