How can I get
real-life experience?
- Internships: Internships are
work experience opportunities that students can engage in to
explore a potential career field, which can be paid/unpaid
and for credit/no credit. These opportunities allow students
to link theoretical concepts from the classroom to
real-world situations. Gaining experience is key! The more
experience you have in combination with good grades, the
more marketable you will be in your job search.
- Informational interviews:
An informational interview
involves talking with people who are currently working in
the field to gain a better understanding of an occupation or
industry -- and to build a network of contacts in that
field. Click here to get the most of an

- Volunteerism and service-learning:
Students who participate in service-learning and
volunteerism contribute to the local, national and
international communities and relate their service to their
studies and other university-based experiences. This allows
for real-world application of their learning, and the
development of personal, professional, leadership and
citizenship skills. Talk to an Advisor in Student Services
about volunteer and service-learning opportunities, or check
